Those looking to snag two displays can check out our best monitor and best budget gaming monitor recommendations, though the Lenovo L24q makes for a good, affordable starting point to any setup. If you decide to go the ultrawide route, we love the Alienware 34 Curved QD-OLED for gaming, and the Samsung CJ791 is our favorite ultrawide display for general use. It really all depends on how you work and play. In response to an informal Twitter poll I put out, some folks praised the seamlessness and simplicity of an ultrawide display, while others noted that they value the ability to better separate tasks and apps across two screens. There’s no one perfect monitor setup for everyone. You’ll have the freedom to position your two displays at whatever viewing angles are most comfortable, and thanks to the many available monitor arms and wall mounts, will gain plenty of options for creating a clean and cool-looking setup. You can even have one monitor in horizontal orientation and the other in vertical, the latter of which is ideal for things like coding, writing or just seeing as much of your dreaded inbox as possible. You can combine monitors at different sizes and resolutions based on your needs, whether you want a big 4K display for gaming and a smaller 1080p screen for viewing your Twitch chat, or two matching quad-HD monitors for clean consistency. Perhaps the biggest benefit to a dual monitor setup is the flexibility to mix and match displays. But using an ultrawide monitor has given new life to some of my favorite PC titles, and if you’re a serious PC gamer and have the cash to spend, I can’t recommend one highly enough. It’s worth noting that not every PC game out there supports ultrawide mode, and you’re still going to be playing in standard widescreen if you hook a console up to this type of display. The already gorgeous racing action of Forza Horizon 5 looked even more breathtaking on my Alienware display, as I could better take in the game’s stunning Mexican vistas as I recklessly drifted around. When playing Halo Infinite, I could suddenly see much more of the battlefield at a glance, making it easier to track enemies and teammates (an ultrawide monitor will not, however, improve your reflexes or aim, as I’ve learned firsthand). Many modern PC games are optimized for an ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio, allowing for even more immersion when playing cinematic titles - and some practical advantages in competitive ones. Using an ultrawide monitor for work has been convenient for gaming, it’s been a revelation. You’ll also benefit from true consistency across your entire screen, whereas even matching dual displays have the potential to differ slightly in terms of color and brightness. Of course, you could get two identical widescreen monitors and position them side to side for similar viewability, but then you’re dealing with a nasty border right in the middle. If you’re a video editor or music producer with long timelines, an ultrawide monitor will let you see more of your project at once without having to frequently scroll side to side. It’s a lot more immediate and convenient than my old setup, which consisted of a 24-inch Dell Gaming Monitor in front of me and a 21-inch Acer monitor off to the side. When using the Alienware QD-OLED’s wide 34-inch screen, I feel like I can see two monitors’ worth of content without having to constantly turn my head. This type of multitasking has always been easy on my dual-monitor setup, but it’s even easier on an ultrawide screen because everything’s in my immediate line of sight all at once. I’m almost always juggling two things at once - taking notes during a presentation, writing up a story while reading a press release, sending Slack messages while ignoring a video call…the list goes on. I realized that many of our young people use shade to engage each other because many of them have been kept at a distance by people in their own lives. In a Huffington Post blog from 2013, titled “ Tongues Untied: Shade Culture - Throwing Shade, Reflecting Light,” Wade Davis wrote: “What breaks my heart is that shade seems to come easier than love for some. I ask these questions not to shame and problematize those who find enjoyment in throwing shade, but rather to interrogate the source of this pleasure. That urge of wanting to react in a very specific way, though, led me to question our real desires when throwing shade. Imani Williams, is “the ability to check a person with deft precision, whether it’s in person, through text, or via social media.” It’s similar to shade, think of it as a first cousin, as they are both comparable response tools. I laughed at some - because I love, can take, and can dish out a good joke - but others made me consider retreating to a place where my response was either shade or a clapback. The most popular one, among them, compared me to a gallon of milk others were extremely bigoted and hate-filled. Initial thoughts ranged from, “Damn, has my picture landed on The Shade Room” to “Why can’t people just let me live?” Though the photo never appeared on TSR - the gossip site that regularly posts side-eye-inducing stories about black people - it did materialize as both a topic of discussion and a source of comedy on Twitter and Facebook timelines. But this would all fade away days later when I received various messages asking me if I’d known that people were resharing my picture across different social media sites. It was an exciting moment: family members journeyed up from Atlanta to New York and were extremely proud. I was wearing a white, shoulder-less dress and a graduate cap to commemorate and celebrate the completion my Master’s program from The New School. In late May, I uploaded a picture to Instagram. I later freed myself from this armor because it began to feel toxic - it wasn’t healthy, even in instances when I used it to defend myself. But I can’t recall it ever being a fun thing to do. Its armor protected me from bullying and the harsh realities of gender-based violence and body shaming throughout middle school, high school, and my early years of college. I never fully participated in those spaces for obvious reasons, but shade was once a badge of honor that I took pride in wearing. It felt familiar to the kind of joking - or “joaning,” as we call it in the south - that took place on the back of school buses, in black barber shops, black hair salons, and black churches. I hadn’t yet seen Paris Is Burning, or attended a drag ball, but, coming into gayness, I had learned about shade as a cultural phenomenon. It was a way to engage and challenge the vapid heteronormativity surrounding me, and anyone else that threatened my livelihood. When I first invited the world into who I was, many moons ago, I learned shade as a defense mechanism - a counteractive mode of communication, a way of being, and a survival method. Given all of this, why are we so obsessed with throwing shade? And when did it become cool to do so? Ībout the same time in The Netherlands in 1991, the NCR Corporation with AT&T Corporation invented the precursor to 802.11, intended for use in cashier systems, under the name WaveLAN. These frequency bands include the same 2.4 GHz bands used by equipment such as microwave ovens, and are thus subject to interference. Federal Communications Commission released parts of the ISM bands for unlicensed use for communications. The different versions of Wi-Fi are specified by various IEEE 802.11 protocol standards, with the different radio technologies determining radio bands, and the maximum ranges, and speeds that may be achieved. Compatible devices can network through wireless access points to each other as well as to wired devices and the Internet. Wi-Fi uses multiple parts of the IEEE 802 protocol family and is designed to interwork seamlessly with its wired sibling, Ethernet. As of 2019, over 3.05 billion Wi-Fi enabled devices are shipped globally each year. As of 2017, the Wi-Fi Alliance consisted of more than 800 companies from around the world. Wi-Fi is a trademark of the non-profit Wi-Fi Alliance, which restricts the use of the term Wi-Fi Certified to products that successfully complete interoperability certification testing. These are the most widely used computer networks in the world, used globally in home and small office networks to link desktop and laptop computers, tablet computers, smartphones, smart TVs, printers, and smart speakers together and to a wireless router to connect them to the Internet, and in wireless access points in public places like coffee shops, hotels, libraries and airports to provide visitors with Internet access for their mobile devices. Hotspot Shield does explain a little of how Hydra works, though. Unlike the open source OpenVPN, WireGuard or ExpressVPN's Lightway, the code isn't available to the public, so experts can't check for privacy issues. Hotspot Shield's Hydra protocol is more difficult to figure out, because it's the company's own proprietary technology. This can be hugely complicated, but just seeing that a service supports a secure protocol like OpenVPN gives some reassuring feedback about its safety. Understanding a VPN's security usually starts with looking at its protocol support, encryption and authentication details. Hotspot Shield allows you to choose your preferred VPN protocol from its Settings menu (Image credit: Hotspot Shield) Privacy There's no Bitcoin payment option, unfortunately, but you can use a card or PayPal, and if anything goes wrong later you're protected by an unusually generous 45-day money-back guarantee. If you'll use all those licenses, that translates to $2.40 per user per month. Hotspot Shield does have one handy option in the Family plan (opens in new tab), which gets you coverage for five people, with five devices each, for only $19.99 billed monthly, or $11.99 on the annual plan. Most providers charge around $3 to $5 a month for annual products, and even less for longer-term contracts ( Private Internet Access offers a three-year plan covering up to 10 devices for $2.19 a month). That's at the high-end of the normal VPN price range. The paid VPN (opens in new tab) starts at $12.99 billed monthly, dropping to $7.99 on the annual plan (opens in new tab) to protect up to five devices. There’s also a big plus – there are no annoying ‘per month’ bandwidth limits, and you can use it as much as you like – but unless you really have no VPN budget at all, it’s impossible to recommend. Hotspot Shield's free VPN plan offers one location (US), almost no features, no email or live chat support, and a host of annoying ads on the mobile apps. When we talked to The Farm 51 at Gamescom, they told us that "everything you see" in the game exists in reality, since they went in to scan the environments in question, so as to reproduce them in the virtual world. The full release is planned for the second half of 2020, but for now you can watch an Early Access trailer below that shows us what's coming next month. Both actions pretty much give you the same ending and it doesn't really elaborate too much and what happens to Igor once he leaves the plant. With a branching narrative and multiple endings, The Farm 51 promises new experiences even if you play everything in Early Access, and closed alpha tests are starting tomorrow for Kickstarter backers too. Whether you chose entering the portal at the end and killing yourself after speaking to 'God', or just shutting down the plant and letting Igor live. Eight hours of storytelling will be included, as well as access to all future updates, adding even more like characters, episodes, and equipment. New locations, characters, and mechanics have been added thanks to the support from backers, and on October 16 you can see the plant, Kopachi kindergarten, the Eye of Moscow, and parts of Pripyat. For help completing it see our Chernobylite Heist guide below. Once you feel you are ready to start the heist you can set out on it. This heist tasks you with putting together a rag-tag group of companions to complete. Try to survive and reveal the twisted secrets of Chernobyl in the 3D-scanned recreation of the real Exclusion Zone. The Farm 51 has revealed that Chernobylite is set to hit Steam Early Access on October 16, meaning you can head into the Exclusion Zone just in time for Halloween, including Pripyat and the power plant itself. The end goal of Chernobylite is to complete the heist at the end of the game. Chernobylite is a science-fiction survival horror experience, mixing the free exploration of its disturbing world with challenging combat, unique crafting, and non-linear storytelling. |
